What is Obscura VPN
Obscura VPN is a privacy-focused VPN service that launched in February 2025 and is operated by Sovereign Engineering Inc. Unlike conventional VPNs where a single provider acts as a man-in-the-middle seeing both who you are and what you browse, Obscura splits traffic across two independent hops: an Obscura relay that sees your IP but not your destination, and a Mullvad exit node that sees your traffic but not your identity. The service is available as native apps for iOS, macOS, and Android as of 2026-05-30, with Windows and Linux clients in development. It also supports manual WireGuard configuration for other platforms.
How no-KYC is it?
Obscura is designed for anonymous signup from the ground up. No email address is required to create an account-users receive an opaque account identifier (e.g., "OBS-20848919") instead. The service accepts payment exclusively via Bitcoin Lightning Network, eliminating the paper trail associated with credit cards or bank transfers. There is no identity verification, no phone number requirement, and no personal information collected during registration. This makes it genuinely KYC-free rather than merely "no-logs."
Privacy & security
The core privacy guarantee stems from Obscura's two-party relay architecture, which the company describes as "provably private by design." Even if Obscura's infrastructure were compromised, the relay servers only see encrypted packets destined for Mullvad exit nodes, not the final websites or services. Conversely, Mullvad sees exit traffic but cannot link it to individual Obscura users.
In December 2025, Cure53 completed an independent audit of Obscura's macOS app, network extension, and protocol. The auditors found no major vulnerabilities within the defined threat model and characterized the service as "well-engineered." Several low-impact bugs were identified and subsequently fixed; the full report is publicly available.
Obscura uses QUIC-based transport layered over WireGuard, which disguises VPN traffic as HTTP/3 traffic to evade deep packet inspection and censorship. Additional features include built-in ad, tracker, and malware blocking; a kill switch; and strict leak protection. The company publishes its source code on GitHub and maintains a public status page at obscurastatus.net.
Payments, fees & limits
Payment is accepted only via Bitcoin Lightning Network-no fiat, no on-chain Bitcoin, and no altcoins including Monero. This is a deliberate trade-off for payment anonymity, though it requires users to have Lightning infrastructure. The service uses a connection-slot model for device management rather than traditional simultaneous connection limits. Referral links are available for inviting other users. Pricing specifics are not disclosed in the public crawl and would require visiting the payment flow directly.
User experience & support
Native apps cover the three major mobile and desktop platforms: iOS, macOS, and Android (released May 19, 2026). Android builds are distributed via Google Play and Obtainium, with alternative app store submissions in progress. WireGuard configurations allow broader device compatibility including routers and Linux systems.
Support channels include email (support@obscura.net), Discord, Matrix bridge, and a knowledge base covering topics from DNS options to bypassing Reddit's VPN blocks. The company maintains a blog with technical deep-dives and announcements, and is active on Nostr, Mastodon, and X. A connection check tool is built into the website for troubleshooting.
Who it's for
Obscura suits privacy purists who prioritize cryptographic separation of identity from activity over convenience. The Lightning-only payment requirement and lack of fiat on-ramps filter for technically capable users. Those in censored regions may benefit from QUIC obfuscation, while everyday users seeking streaming unblocking may find the limited platform support and no-refund policy (unverified) less accommodating. Compared to Mullvad itself, Obscura adds the two-party relay but removes direct fiat payments; compared to Tor, it offers better performance with reduced anonymity set size.
KYC & privacy
No account required at all.
Obscura collects no identifying information at signup and operates a two-party relay designed so that no single entity can reconstruct user activity. The service claims no logging by design rather than by policy. No privacy incidents, breaches, or data requests have surfaced in the evidence as of 2026-05-30.

Verdict
Obscura VPN is a strong choice for technically adept users who demand structural privacy guarantees rather than policy promises. Its two-party architecture and Lightning payments distinguish it from conventional no-logs VPNs, though the narrow platform support and payment friction make it less suitable for casual users.

Love the architecture but wish they took XMR. Lightning is fine for now. Android app runs smooth on GrapheneOS.

Finally a VPN that doesn't make me trust a pinky promise. Two-party relay is the real deal. Signed up with a throwaway LN wallet in seconds.

Good concept, young service. Waiting for the Linux client before I fully commit. Cure53 audit helps but only covered macOS.

Carl Dong built this right. QUIC obfuscation gets through my university firewall where WireGuard alone fails. No email signup is refreshing.
